Lessons in Powder Coating: Qualicoat Class 1 vs. Class 2

What does Qualicoat Class 1 mean, and how does it differ from Class 2? Which quality is suitable for which application and why? These are questions we often receive from our clients. That is why we explain these topics in detail in our series 'Lessons in Powder Coating.'

Within the Qualicoat system, powder coatings are divided into different classes based on their performance. The most common categories are Class 1 and Class 2.

Qualicoat Class 1: Class 1 powder coatings are the most commonly used standard coatings. They offer solid protection against corrosion and UV radiation and are suitable for standard outdoor use. A major advantage of Class 1 is that these coatings have proven to be reliable for various applications for many years. They are also very affordable, which makes them attractive for projects with a tighter budget. Furthermore, Class 1 powders are available in a wide range of colours and finishes, making them versatile for various aesthetic requirements.

Qualicoat Class 2: Class 2 powder coatings are specially designed for demanding environments, such as extreme weather conditions and intensive UV radiation. These coatings contain more high-quality resins, which ensures a longer life and better color stability.

What is the difference?
The main difference between Class 1 and Class 2 coatings is durability. Class 2 coatings retain their color and gloss much longer. Where Class 1 coatings can discolor or lose their gloss after a few years, Class 2 coatings remain beautiful for longer. See the table for color and gloss loss from the folder 'Alesta Super Durable'

The choice between Qualicoat Class 1 and Class 2 powder coatings depends on the specific requirements of a project. Class 1 offers a robust, cost-effective solution and is a proven choice for standard outdoor use. Class 2 is better suited to environments and projects where durability, UV resistance and aesthetics are paramount. In these situations, the benefits of Class 2 far outweigh the higher initial cost.
