Lessons in Powder Coating: Color difference on the project?

Choosing a colour from the RAL range is often an essential part of the design process. However, upon delivery, colour differences may be visible. For example, think of a colour difference between the window frames and the flashings or between the roof edges and the fences. This is of course very annoying. Not only does it lead to delays and extra costs, but it can also lead to conflicts. In short, nobody wins.

That is why we like to pay attention to this subject in our series 'Lessons in Powder Coating' .

Although RAL colours are fixed, there are no fixed tolerances. This means that a RAL colour from supplier A can differ from the same RAL colour from supplier B. Even within the range of one supplier, different series in the same RAL can differ greatly from each other.

The first photo shows two samples, both in the color RAL 9001. Despite the fact that they are both RAL 9001, a difference in color is clearly visible.

A color difference can also occur because different batches of powder are used. To minimize the risk of color differences, we offer the following tips:

- Make sure you order the color based on the powder supplier's coding. Samples are always available free of charge.

- Let your paint supplier know how many square meters the total job will cover so they can order powder from one batch.
